Social model

The social model of disability puts the focus on society disabling the individual or community.

A common response

We do not have the money for sign language interpreters.

This a common example of “society” disabling the Deaf individual or the Deaf community.

  • A streaming or television coverage of an emergency alert
  • A webinar accepted as continuing education credits for Deaf professionals
  • A city or town hall meeting with Deaf residents seeking information on where their taxes are being put to use
  • An in-flight announcements with Deaf passengers wondering what is going on
  • A tour company accommodating people with mobility-accessible transportation

Such response is part of the reason it takes me so long to recover from advocating for my right as a Deaf individual.
